i don't think thats an adequate assessment of knoppix.

Gives you a taste without cramming the whole meal in your mouth at once.

Knoppix is only temporary, you cant really do anything with it.

Its a demo.

This distro will rox0r j00r box0rs, i used it at work once & got into the wireless network TSD had running without any hiccups (I accidently got into it :? ).

The same thing as it always was? There will always be people too stupid to look past products to their advantages and disadvantages. While I don't use Knoppix.. I feel it is a valuable linux distro.

I think Knoppix is useful, hows this, when I get home Ill upload a screenshot of me running Knoppix using a VNC client to login to my server running Windows 2000. I dunno I thought that was pretty scary.

But yeah, if you save a small config file to your HDD I think it's great just for messing around with at home to learn a few things.

Besides, It Looks Sexy. 8)

Just out of curiosity, whats the reason you run linux (im assuming in some emulator) in Widnows? Just to learn? If so, want to give me an idea of how to do it?

I tried it once with some OS emulator (cant remember which now) but what ever it was, linux didnt like the 'emulated' video card.. said during the install (Was red hat 7.2 i think) it couldnt find drivers for it...

I would like to learn some linux basics but dont want to dual boot and dont have a PC i could install it on.

Kaygo

i love the fact that when im workin on the server here at work my boss says "i have nfi what the hell you just did".

When infact all i did was reset the network service or chmod something.

If i did it in GUI he would say "hey i can do that too"

I admit that im not a smart person, but it looks really cool when you can work through terminal

yeh but who wants to use a gui to configure their network?

you can use the console if you want to, knoppix's gui is optional.

and you can write to it, as well :P

(just in a ramdrive haha)

well why do you think i said in a ramdrive

additionally, the operating system may run from a CD, but it still has functionality with fixed disks. you can use a hard drive with it you know.

knoppix is a POS. I love Knoppix STD tho.

I will be using it at CCGL #25 but purely to target DCOM attacks. If I can get it to work with the switches.

edit : no seriously you're entitled to your opinion

i think its good because it gives you a taste without doing ANYTHING permanent unless you want to.

if ur going to check out linux, y not give it a proper go and install a real distro
cd distro's are kool in a sense but will never give u a complete sense of what linux is all about

this is also y i am against dual-booting

most people have a play get sick of it and never go back to it

but some people are also not lucky enough to have a spare pc laying around to install linux on as well so i can c pro's and cons for both

once again, refer to snakeoils wonderful quote.

knoppix is a "real" distro

it exists
its tangible in cd form

its linux

it's a real linux distro.

just like your illegal copy of windows XP is still a real copy of windows XP.

1: unlike some i run completely legit OS
2: im not doubting its a real distro, but in MY eyes, its a CD distro, wich is 1 not suited for perminant use like Fedora,SuSe,Debian,Redhat Enterprise, Mandrake .....

that sounds to me like you called knoppix not a real linux distro

besides, OF COURSE something like fedora or suse or mandrake would be more suited as a permanent OS than knoppix would. We were never debating its suitability as a PERMANENT operating system compared to other ones that install on hard drives
