hey, just wondering what we are and arn't allowed to discuss in here... with uni i'm doing work on xbox emulation as well as looking at the new methods that the XBox2 will use to store games (new DVD format)... so if som1 can give me a yes or no on the following would be great cos i'm sure some of u ppl would find this stuff interesting

XBox Emulation
Linux on XBox
XBox Mod Chips used to run freeware apps (not for piracy)
PC on XBox emulation
XBox Security
XBox 2 (Security, DVD format etc.)

1)XBox Emulation

3)XBox Mod Chips used to run freeware apps (not for piracy)
4)PC on XBox emulation
5)XBox Security
6)XBox 2 (Security, DVD format etc.)

Alcatrazz.

I am not an admin or anything, but I think we should be allowed to discuss most of those points to a limit. E.G:

1) I assume you mean ROMS/Emulators for Xbox? I can't see why not, seeing I haven't heard of a WORKING Xbox Emulator yet. So yes.
2) Why not? Linux is freeware. You own your xbox. So Yes.
3) It's not the modchip that lets you run freeware apps. So yes.
4) I can't see a problem with this (it will be argued) but too an extent, yes.
5) Too an extent. Don't even think about bringing up vulnerabilities etc. (It's common sense, but I'm sure you already know). Just clearing things up.
6) Yes. Why not talk about the new Xbox?

Just my opinion, I would like to see more threads opened up about Xbox.

i'm talking about both running XBox games on a PC as well as running all sorts of other appz on an XBox... only catch there is the XBox has to be modded for that to work...

also james, none of the xbox emulators out atm actually emulate an xbox... they just do alot of high level processing to mimic it and afaik Halo is the only game they have got running... hence the reason y we took on this uni project ;)

[b]Its cool to talk about some of the stuff you have brought up.
As long as security issues, modifying the Xbox programming and what not are kept away from.
Brett was very close to keeping it all good. :)
As long as you dont have to do something illegal to get something running.

does that mean i cant talk about say running MAME games on an XBox as the XBox has to be modded for it to work? (but keep in mind the point of the discussion wouldn't be the mod chip, it would be basicly looking at the whole potential of the XBox)

and as far as the security side goes, there's not much bad stuff to talk about anyway... the XBox has tighter security routines than most Server OS's that i've seen...

well actually alc, turok is the main game they have running on the xbox emulators not halo, http://www.caustik.com/cxbx/ , they have had turok going for quite some time, like a year when i got my first xbox. also these days no-one needs to really "hard-mod" an xbox as the amount of soft mods out there are growing every day and there is no longer a need to solder anything...lol

there r 2 emulators available to the public... one of em can run halo and nothing else, and the other one (Cxbx) can't run any games yet... but the build they are working on has run turok...

and are we allowed to discuss soft mods?

and are we allowed to discuss soft mods?

I very much doubt it..

Best to keep away from anything to do with "mods" per-say, unless its strictly concerning case modding. same applies to soft mods guys. as far as xbox 2 goes, sure talk all u want why not? just dont go too far into the security of it all. we dont want this forum turning into a hub for crackers & the like to share thier mod secrets.
