In that case, steam's fu*ked you over. As it has several people. If you really want NS you should just get a copy of HL from EB. I don't think there's any other way unfortunately.

I'd say that's the prob. CZ no being the base engine.
If you get Source:Silver it gives you all the backcatalogue. So HL and all mods. Quite nice for the price $80au
Or.
Use the version of CS we were using at ccgl to get steam working as it was not being accesible for lan. I loaded NS onto it and it seems to work fine.

What do you mean by the CCGL one.... The cracked version?

Can I get the Silver-equivelant not from Steam? i.e. If I go into EB on Tuesday/Wednesday to buy HL2, can I get a version with the back catalogue of Valve products? Is that the $130 package?
James
10-11-2004, 12:42 PM
i think the $130 one is the one that comes with tshirts and a whole -load of stickers.

Yup the cracked version.
And no I don't think the retail one gives you access to the backcatalogue. But you get a t-shirt and a pretty box......
http://www.steampowered.com/index.php?area...hive=yes&id=327 (http://www.steampowered.com/index.php?area=news&archive=yes&id=327)
Us Prices at %30 and it's aussie.
The 'off-the-shelf' packs are about equivalent to the 'bronze' steam version.
Sevendust
10-11-2004, 01:18 PM
Ah, so I should be able to get the box set 'silver' edition for 80-100?
Sorry for thread hijack, but it'd be nice to know I can get old HL and all the mods without needing steam (dialup sucks the big one).

That's a load of bollocks. Am I still able to nab someone's files that has downloaded the silver pack and use the cd-key from my bronze pack to play dod:source, etc or doesn't it work that way?

As long as you register through steam, and have the cache files in the local directory, it should work.
As far as I can see, they are trying to remove having 'keys' at all, and do it all through the steam client. Which I hate.

Doesn't work that way.
Since DOD and CS were free mods, they remained free for owners of half life...but were also released retail.
THIS TIME ROUND THOUGH, they are things you have to pay for. Buying HL-2 won't be enough, youll need to get the pack that includes those mods, or pay for them separately.
sucks when people sell out their free mods to companies like valve. Can't blame em tho, most people do it to get a foot in the door in the industry, and it worked for them (and trauma studios with desert combat) so best of luck to them.

I paid $81.00 for my HL2 Silver pack, and I'm more than impressed with it :) I've had it for awhile now, and considering you get CS Source, HL2 and games like CZ that I didn't have before, it was great value for me :D
And no the files are locked to your steam account, you cannot just copy the *.gcf files over. That would be way too easy :P Valve may be silly but not that silly :)
James

of course though, if you legally were allowed to have those games via steam, you could then shut down, copy over the gcf files through the network from someone else's computer, restart steam, and it checks the cache files and goes "oh, im updated 100%, ill let you play the game now"
Problem solved
money saved

If I was Vivendi, I'd be kicking Valve's ass so hard right now. I'd tell them to quit stuffing around and release a decent retail pack.

I bought the Silver Pack after seeing everyone playing source at the last lan.. I love it ;P
Im actually half decent at it to.. Just got to hunt down the servers with all the n00bs ;P
And no the files are locked to your steam account, you cannot just copy the *.gcf files over. That would be way too easy :P Valve may be silly but not that silly :)
That's not actually correct, you can copy anyone's gcf files over the top of your own, and you wont need to do any updating at all. I've done this plenty of times between my home computers, aswell as copying the CS:Source cache files off Mr Sam, aswell as when Steam first came out, i just downloaded GCF files off some straight web site as it was faster than steam at the time
However, even if you have the gcf file for a certain game, you wont be able to PLAY it, unless the game is registered on your account
so Sevendust, just go to dezza's place and leach all his cache files..
I definately recommend the Steam Silver package if you can get it..
Hell i even went to St George and signed up for a debit credit card just so i could. (It's an normal bank card, but has a credit card numbers)

I was trying to say that you couldn't just copy over everyones GCF files for games you don't own and play them.
I know about copying them over to save updating time, providing you actually own the game on that steam account.
I bought the Silver Pack about a month ago now, and it was the best $80 I spent in a while. For CZ & CSS I copied the GCF files over, but they still needed a little bit of updating and it was fine.
But that was AFTER I had purchased the Silver pack through my steam account
