oogle will gradually roll out POP3 (Post Office Protocol) support over the coming weeks to users of its Gmail service, allowing them to use the feature to download e-mail messages from Gmail servers to e-mail applications on devices such as PCs and wireless handhelds.
*
With POP3 support, a user will be able to transfer server-based Gmail messages to a client-side e-mail application such as Microsoft's Outlook and have the messages stored on a local hard drive, where they will be accessible when the user is offline. Users with wireless devices that have POP3-compliant e-mail clients will be able to download their Gmail messages to personal digital assistants or cell phones, too.
Google is working on adding an antivirus-scanning feature to the Web mail service--possibly by licensing an existing technology--and on developing an HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) interface to make Gmail compatible with browsers that don't support JavaScript. Currently, only JavaScript-enabled browsers can access Gmail, which uses JavaScript extensively

yeah but it wont take off, the userbase for msn is too large for it to migrate... whereas with an email address it doesnt matter at all....
although, ICQ was frickin huge, and still kind of is, but has lost millions to msn users, who dont use icq at all anymore...
I've still got my icq number, still know it off the top of my head, but havent logged in to icq in about six months or so

Can't wait to use Thunderbird in combo with Gmail, it'll be huge.
Regarding the Messenger, it'll be about as hard as emigrating users from IE to Firefox. As long as MS ships messenger with Windows, people are too damned lazy to look what the hell's out there. So while I'd be using it, not many othes will be.

but if they could integrate google messenger like trillian does... then that could be gold!

I reckon, Trillian is the bomb. They could even have a web messenger linked to both Google and Gmail, that way it's free advertising and everyone who has Gmail and uses Google loves them and so will be all the more willing to try the Messenger out.
Huzzah for Google and Mozilla.

It's slowly forming, my cohort. Don't you worry about that. Every day that passes Microsoft is being weakened by conversions to *nix, Firefox and Thunderbird, Google desktop search.

dont get me wrong, i'm a devout anti-MS person... but i still use and love WinXP mainly cos it makes life so much easier... i'd love to be able to use linux... but until i can walk into eb and choose any game for it, and not have to worry about manually updating distro's and stuff, i'll stick with xp
btw, windows is still the only microsoft thing i use... i love firefox over ie, winamp over WMP etc.

basically what alc said is my line of thinking... including window sbeing the only ms program i use, other than age of empires 2 :)
