View Full Version : Wireless Network Setup
this really should go in wireless section, but no one ever reads that so meh:
I wanna set up a wireless network in my house. Does wireless go by line of sight [ie need repeaters to go around corners] or can it go through walls. If so, how many walls and how thick? To set up a network between three 3 pcs, what parts do i need? how many parts and what brand? im stabbing in the dark here, i got no idea with wireless. DO i need a wireless switch or what? [i already got an ethernet switch].

depends what wireless you're talking about
ill just assume you're talking about wi fi, 802.11b or 802.11g ...
in which case no, line of sight is not neccessary. as for the walls, it depends largely what they are made up of, but with a home, it shouldnt be a problem unless you have a microwave sitting next to your wireless access point :D
if you wanna set up a network between THREE pc's..
you;; want a wireless AP (its like a hub, but for wireless) and youll be able to plug that into your ethernet switch, and then youll want to get three PCI wireless cards, in the same network standard (802.11b , which is 11mbps but VERY cheap, or 802.11g, 54megabit but more expensive)
and away you go, it's very simple from there on it, just some initial setup stuff, and you're ready to go.
edit: you dont need to plug the wireless access point into the ethernet switch, i just said that coz u mentioned the ethernet switch, but yeah :)
Put it this way, would it go from my house to the house next door, if both houses are made of brick and there are no windows? thats the kind of thing we are dealing with.

Yes it would. My neighbour and i have an access point each, i can pick up either network from my house. The more stuff in between kills more signal, keep it as clean as possible. It's microwave so anything water based attenuates (signal fade) the - out of it eg trees, plants. I guess i could bring my wireless access point to the lan so you can have a look at what it is like.
i want it to go from the bottom floor of a house to a floor the floors up. though nothing but wood and carpet etc. Also, instead of brining the connection in through DSL Modem--->PC--->wireless NIC--->wireless access point--->other users on network, can i bring it in through a router or something? like go from plug on wall, straight into DSL router which then splits the connection wirelessly through the house? i have 3PC's that want to use it. Would everyone be able to use the net through a router? can that even be done? do wireless DSL routers even exist?
i wont be at #19, but ill be at #20 and everything after that for sure.
thanks, Hal.
btw, i know what access points look like, ive seen em, but this wireless game has got me a wee bit confused. take an access point for example, it may have two airials, how many pc's can join the network through that access point?? meh, thanks again

ok
here is wireless 101
an acess point is either 2,11,22,54,72 mbit
each client takes a slice of that..
some of the stoopid aps will divy up the bandwidth, some will give it as its needed.
its basically like a "Hubed" network, shared bandwidth.. like turris DSL :D
ya average wireless will go pretty far, the things they dont like is metal, insulation ect.. tends to refelct the signal.
if in doubt i can sell u a 8dbi omni... that has big signal.
u can set ya network up as a "Adhoc witch is peer to peer or "acess point, where every one talks through the ap.
ap is better, easier. better roaming..
u can get dsl modems that have buil in wireless... eg billion or dlink
i can sell ya both :D
once of wireless yall never go back, much like a mini hummmm
any more q's ask me... average wireless indoors 25 - 150 mtrs
outside upto 500 without big phat external antennas
Just a ruff as guts estimate, how much will a good access point, and 3 PCI cards set me back? probably 11mbit or 22mbit, its NOT going to be a high load network. Used purely for net sharing, and the odd PC game every month or so. 11mb is approx 1mbyte right? hmm. thanks bestrafe. You'd match other retail right?
