I recently bought Half Life2, and in steam, I downloaded digital paintball and zombie panic, as well as natural selection.
The problem is, when i want to play them, it says that i need to purchase them.
I have come to a maybe stubborn conclusion that i need to go out and purchase original half life.
I am not sure whether this thread has been posted before.

MMM... if you bought HL2 silver through steam, you can definately play them.
If retail, then you need to have the HL key registered, as they all required that game to run. So you would need to either buy one through steam, or else where.
Basically you need the core engine the game was built on.

kThanks Coogle, I was sure that i needed the original HL, seeing as the source engine is COMPLETELY different.
