I believe we are trying to get 1.5 DSL for the event, but the internet connection will be for the above mentioned usages only. You're going to PhatLAN to LAN, not to surf the net :)
If access is required for drivers/troubleshooting etc either an admin can use it, or access may be provided then.

What kaygo said.
I assume we'll be running some sort of proxy making normal internet surfing unavailable, and at the same time allowing critical services such as steam sign-in and the likes.

mmk... so does that mean you HAVE to have a legal copy of cs etc to play.... if so good :)

so if i purchase HL2 before phat lan... and grab som1's cache file @ the lan... i can use the net connection there to verify it?
will steam updates be available as well? cos alot of ppl dont bother updating before a lan

well maybe they should.
I imagine the facility for downloading steam updates will be available, but don't depend on it. Additionally, if too many people DO depend on it - then it will go really slow and be hours before it is validated.
As it is, on your own home fast broadband connection, it takes ages to verify. So keep that in mind.

you mean on my own home 28.8kbps connection...
a box to limit everything to MSN, ICQ & Port 80 would be so simple.
We would need to disable any packets higher than 250k aswell to stop you online leechers...

a simple *nix box would be the best bet i'd say... just dig up and old pentium that has a NIC and usb for the adsl modem...

There is a 1500/256 Line Already Activated.

No it won't get raped, will be restrictions on the connection, it will be used 80% for Game Autho.

It didnt work when steam first came out, but enough people have said it works now for me to beleive them
1500kadsl will be for steam auths,msn/icq/irc that's all.
If you REALLY need it in a hurry for something else really important, take it up with an admin at the time and they can decide

you know steam's been around before CS retail 1.0 was released, right?
back then there wasnt even any cache files. it just downloaded some of the files as it needed them.
Funny that steam's so old, and still suffers from problems.
Woe is them.
