View Full Version : Powerboards At Phat
As James as said in the info thread about not using your own powerboard etc I just have a question. I connected my own Powerboard and used only 2 spots. Is this ok? Surely it isnt drawing any more power (it had 1 red LED on it) I actualy have a reason for it as well, being a surge protector board. I have had 2 of my power supplys blow before ($120 down the drain for just 1). I thoght you wanted us to bring our own power board, I was never told by anyone not to add my powerboard. Not windging or anything but a little more info should of been given out as the event was starting. Remember there was alot more people there then there are people active on the forums.

osic:
1. we ask that people use our boards as ours are tested and we know have no faults - if you plug yours in, and it blows and takes out all the boards coming off it along with the computers, are you going to cover the costs?
2. by pluging in your own board, you also give that row extra power points, even if you only use your allocated 2 points, that still leaves one left on our board, and 2 on yours (possible of 3 extra points to drain power) for other people to plug stuff into. The power is worked out before the event starts, and each chain of power boards is set to it maximum limit depending on the source of the power.
As for information:
This is an area i noticed at phatlan that needed to be worked on. It will be something i will be bringing up at our next admin meeting, as well as trying to work out the best possible way to get that info to you guys (including the people who dont read our website or forums).

Heh, I'm not an admin so I don't know.
However, brownouts are more damaging, and likely to happen, specially if the system is overloaded. You are probably better off getting a small UPS. Does much better as a line filter etc, and saves you from brownouts.

You know where I could get a decent small ups preferably one that takes the normal electrical plugs and not the iec cables?
cuz I'll be buggered if I'm gonna bring my pc sized lead heap that I use on my server at home to next lan

or just belkin.com.au.
I think this one is about 1kg (I'm not a belkin person).
Looks like an oversized powerboard, but would give your comp time to shut down with monitor.

1. Fair enogh, I know your trying to be fair and safe but surly my 2 week old surge prtected board wasnt of any harm. What about if someones PSU short or somthing, the same thing could happen couldnt it?
2. What are the extra 3 points I have created being used for? I had nothing else to plug into power and Im sure anyone who was going to use more then 2 points then they would bring there own powerboard. Why should I be non surge protected because others are inconsiderate?
Once again Im not having a go at any admins, just trying to show you my point of view. You guys did great to get our 2 rows back up in less then an hour

People see power points, they plug in
they dont consider power issues so its not your fault, its just that you create those extra points. something like taping them up or something might work ?

Yeah that's what I'd be after.. APC has a model like this one but they wouldnt reply to my emails. Can any admin here say it'd be okay to bring one of those the next lan and tape off my other power plugs? or would this be the same as bringing a powerboard?

ok i need 3 power ports - psu, monitor, and wireless kb/mouse. But i guess i could go and get a cord that does the monitor and psu on 1 port.

Technically that's just a double adapter, but it just looks different. But I guess if the admins dont care...

Just a question, but would PhatLAN have insurance if something like a surge or brownout happened?
<sarcasm>yes, we also provide home & contents insurance too Dodo. CCGL will gladly cover all costs if your computer goes down, it doesnt matter if you voluntarily brought your computer.</sarcasm>
