I would buy one, but so far my computer equip hasn't been worth it, but now I'm not so sure.
Will look for one at Tax time :)

My server has a really really old one from when my work upgraded theirs. Only runs for about 5 mins, buts that's good enough for what I need it for

Its like a backup generator..
When the power goes out.. The UPS kicks in and keeps it powered for a certain amount of time..
eg Dezza's one goes for 5 mins..
I don't have one.. and I don't really need one..

most home users dont need one... but for corporate enviroments they are great as a backup in case somthing goes wrong with the backup generator...
my ups has about 10min of life to it... just long enough to shut down the SQL server
Ive been looking for one, but I want one that conditions the power as well. My power seems to be full of spikes ( I dont think the full house ducted air conditioning helps with that) and there has been so many electrical storms lately, like right now. They seem to start at $100 and go from there ut how much am i looking at for one that conditions as well

APC (http://www.apcc.com/products/category.cfm?id=13) is good, OptiUPS (http://www.opti-ups.com/ups_detail.phtml?product_id=47) is good value. I can recommend either of them as I use both.

I run 2x Belkin Universal UPS 800va and 1x Belkin Universal UPS 1200va
never had a hiccup with them, they have AVR so if they detect a brownout they will kick over to battery until it is gone,
brownouts causing the majority of PC failures,
they have a connected equiptment warrenty so ur covered against spikes
and i should really move into the sales dept

I have a base model Opti-UPS 500... Saves me every brownout or outage...
I need another though cause its only on my server... need the other for my gamer...
Though, I think UPSs are less necessary these days as XP recovers well from impromtue outages compared to all b4 it...
my data isnt that important... i dont give a sht about it.

I just dread being in a war, and important one, and the lights flicker...

I would only get a ups for data loss... like a work computer. For home just get insurance.. its like $5 a month for 4k replacment and that includes transporting. I live in a very high brown out spot... 17km from the power base and our pole being the last on the line... I get about 5 brownouts a night, somtimes one resets my comp. About 1 blackout a week. My computer is fine. Our 1 year old fridge on the other hand just died last week, but a fridge uses its power much different to a computer.

To what buggy said....
I'd be buying a little ups asap if it was me... brownouts are baad mmkay
Im not worried about my data, i format every 3 months anyway, but Im worried about blowing another PSU ($140 at that). I now have a $220 PSU and dont feel like blowing it.

Erm, the exchange is on one hell of a ups. It has about a 20 hour backup, when it switches on it hits all sorts of alarms, at which point it will either be fixed or a generator will be turned on. As for your modem, why not plug that into the ups as well? Problem solved.

Dezza Bot, I made a custom power plug and cord that feeds a 4-way power board... My server, 4-port adsl modem and 8-port switch all run off it...

You obviously havent been to the Pindari Av. Exchange ;) Somethings gotta be a bit dodgey between there and my house.
And yeah I've had my modem on a little ups for a fair while now, along with my ap, switches etc
