wondering if anyone knew a good mechanic around the newcastle area (coast is ok, but i'd prefer not) who would have good rates to replace a blown head gasket and possibly a cracked head on a 91 corsair?

Well now, aren't we all wonderful helpers today.
Ignore their "advice" alcatrazz...
Try Steve Griffiths Automotive...

However, if you've got a BHG, and the head is in ok condition (you said possible cracked head) then you're probably better off ordering a genuine replacement head gasket, getting the head shaved a few thou to make sure its a smooth surface, and getting someone with some mechanical experience to help you replace the head gasket yourselves. Will save you a lot of money. but if the head is cracked, or there is substantial pitting in the block or head (are these cast-iron block, alloy head engines?) could be too far gone
Although, on that car, thinking about it again... maybe you should just get a new car ;)
Good luck with whatever you do

well you two didnt really give him any options, did you.
none of us here have no idea how much a gasket kit costs, it may be financially feasible to just get it repaired.
however, if not, it may be a good time to start looking for a new car.
Just don't start looking at early model RX-7's, ok? ;)

yeah, and i bet the insurance and repairs are enough to make his bank 'fully sik' as well
as far as the car goes, i'm planning on getting it repaired so i at least can make some money off it when i sell it

Lookin at anywhere between $1500 to $2000 for head gasket.
Central Coast Motor Group Charge $1900.

What's your point?
BTW, those prices are horrifically overcharged.
Manifesto,
nothing's wrong with series 1 RX-7's.
Except alcatrazz won't get one. Or he will look at another one, almost get it, post about it on the forums, then change his mind cause he feels he has no self control, and generally waste everyones time B)

Where the hell did you get that quote from, is it for just the gasket or the labour to get it replaced, a head gasket should not cost more that $600 and thats for a v8 so a straight 6 should only be a few hundred

it's a 2.4L 4cyl...
and everywhere around here is quoting around the $1200 mark
James
06-06-2005, 02:49 PM
Well if "everyone around here" is quoting that, look elsewhere
sydney aint that far away.
Or do it yourself

i dont know about you james, but working a full time job as well as full time uni, doens't leave me much time to 'do it yourself'
i'd much prefer somone who knows what there doing, i have no problems with smaller repairs, but once the heads off, it's past my level
and yeah, lets get the car towed 200k's to get it done cheaper... what a great idea, wish i'd thought of it

ffs... whinge whinge whinge.
don't want to take it somewhere to get it done cheaper? then don't.
have you ACTUALLY gotten quotes or are you just pulling numbers out of your bum like maj? (i say this because he just pulls a random number and a random location, and he probably doesnt even know what engine was in a ford corsair... i'm aware alcatrazz has mentioned it in the thread already, but that was after maj said what he did)
also, how are you working full time uni and full time work at the same time? bit impossible, innit
unless there's two of you.
obviously the car's off the road, so why cant you and a more mechanically minded fellow than you spend a weekend with some beer and a barbeque and the chilton or gregorys manual for your car and fix it?
LIFES SO HARD ISNT IT MARTIN!
ah well, chin up mate... I'm sure you'll reach some resolution soon

do you have any idea how much it costs to tow a car 200 k's?
didn't think so
moochie
06-06-2005, 03:31 PM
Sorry bout your car.
I don't know anyone who can fix it, my dad does everything to my car.
But yeah, it shouldn't cost to much for the gasket and they shouldn't even charge you to check the head because they have to look at it anyways to fit the gasket.

your ignorance and stupidity astounds me.
I just agreed with you, and said if you dont want to take it somewhere to get it done cheaper, then don't.

thanks for the posts guys, the lowest quote from the newcastle area is $950 from lube mobile of all places...
faux - i'll give him a call, but again the only problem will be getting the car to him...
while i was at the ford dealership tho, was looking at the new focus comming out soon... too bad it's only a 5 door... no sexy 3 door option :-(
also looked at a nice mx-6, but looking is about all i'm planning on doing for now

Doesn't cost me anything.
I have a good mate with a tray truck. I guess that doesn't help you though. Sorry...
As for the head gasket, go buy a Mini. Cost me $20 for a head gasket when I blew mine in the old beast.
Better yet, get a VT. Haven't had a mechanical problem in 20,000 k's. (Since I bought it)
Sorry again for no help.
Maybe you can buy Bestrafes ghost Soarer with an invisible cheque
AlCaTrAzz
11-06-2005, 11:15 AM
somhow i'd imagine that even an invisible car from beefy would still come with real problems...
either way, the car should be finished today, so i'll post later when i know what we end up doing with it... looks like the head is fine atm so shouldn't be too bad

I helped a mate strip down his 750cc honda motor in his lounge room and totally recondition it while we watched TV...
If you have good tools and a half good memory for the order things come apart and where nuts and bolts go, joe avg can do quite a bit...
gasket sets, valve sleeves and the like don't cost a lot...
maybe all ccglers should pitch in 10 bux each and we buy a bomb and disect it and fix it or just prac it...

car is finally finished, running smooth as...
lube mobile ended up getting the job, good mechanic, no worries!
