Heh, I spent about 2 hours just putting together a computer in a 'wish list' for my next one... and it's almost possible. Set for upgrading it when the dual core chips come out... but available now :) got the prices from Umart... they seem to be competative.

AMD 64 3200 $277
Gigabyte Mobo GA-K8NULTRA-SLI $209
2x Value Select 2gb Corsair Ram $286
DualSLIPack Leadtek PX6600GT $550
2x WD 250gb SataII WD2500KS $430
Antec 550power Antec TC2-550 $180
Antec Case Sonnata II $180 (Extra PSU)
____

Total $2196

I have DVD writer, which is about the only thing missing.... oooooo.... so tempted after next pay check... :)

Not bad at all.

I'd be tempted to push for a 3500+

But that's just me being power-hungry :P

My advice
ditch 1gb of that ram and get a faster cpu :)
Also I don't see a power problem with the psu that is supplied with the case, as its a nice 450w antec :)

oh and dual core Athlons are out now, but of course it'd cost almost half of your current total

Well, that's why I put the slightly cheaper cpu, so when the dual cores come down in price, it won't be wasted money.

As for the power supply, the other antec true control one, apparently has been designed with SLI in mind that's why I was looking at it.

Yeah, dual core $800 .... ouch not worth it for the time being... at least unless I had buckets of money ;)

Yeah nice one coogs...

Lotsa nice prices online... I like www.auspcmarket.com.au because I have a history with them and I've taken advantage of a few of their ridiculous specials...

There's no excuses now for ppl not to have a reasonable rig...

Yeah I see you points, you're going with the 3000 as sort of a temporary cpu... and then come to think of it the 450watt probably would be cutting it a bit close to power 2 6600gt's AND a x2 cpu :)

:) I'll definately be looking at it when I get my tax back. Hopefully I'll have broadband by then too, so I can take advantage of the rig :)

And maybe they'll have teh 10000rpm SataII drives out by then :)

heh, show me a sataII drive that can actually go faster than 150mbps and I'm sold

or 20krpm SATA drives that following the rules of diminishing returns are able to hit 100MBs

Heheh.. good point, but if you have the native command queueing going as part of the speed boost at least should be able to fill out more of the bandwidth and have less chug...

Anyone know why none of the AMD boards seem to have DDRII? I know the latencies suck on DDRII, but it is considerably faster isn't it?

No DDR2 on Anthlon64 until their next socket. In all honesty I wouldn't worry about 'missing out' on the extra bandwidth

Yeah, was just looking into the no DDRII thing.. but I find it amusing that they are still kicking intel's backside on the 'old' ram type :)

Just a bit more future proofing I guess, might not be fully utilsed now, but better than having to upgrade the core system shortly down the track.

I'm reading funny cs.s posts about how guys 1337 pci-e sli rigs are getting ordinary results for source...

I'm definately going to hold off that new chit for a while...

Might just go an agp 939 and 3500+ venice and stay wif my agp 6800u

Its cuz they're probably noobs that don't know that even a single 6800u will bottleneck most cpus. I'd be quite happy to kick their ass in source benchmarks with a single x800xtpe (stock clocks) and my 3.14Ghz Athlon64

Absolutely everything is telling me not to buy the latest n greatest atm...

I reckon other that going 64bit in the near future, I wouldn't be going any of that new stuff till it aint new anymore, but normal... or dead...
