by the sounds of it, if your saying it's taking over 24 hours to install your OS... then linux needs to come a long way before it can compete with Windows and OSx

trazz, Gentoo is by far one of the best OS's going around today.

When installed, it has only what the machine needs to run. My full install including GUI is 723mb.

Runs like a dog shot in the ar5e & never ever goes down.

Im not sure what neo is running it on, but i installed it on my p4 2.4 & it takes me about 5 hours for everything. Mind you, i take a shortcut by creating my own FTP using the disti files from previous installs.

/me doesnt think he is welcome at WPG.

Gentoo is really hardcore trazz, if your just starting out i recommend something like fedora. Its very simple to setup, if you have probs just shoot me a PM on MSN.

only probs i had was gnome insrtall screwing up with perl, then some libraries.

other than that it damm sweet

running it on a celeron 1.8 512mb ram and 2 nics

it acting as firewall /gateway / router /proxy /fileserver

really noticed the performance increase :)

im like "startx" - boom there is gnome ready to go

currently installing freenx server - VNC like program but it has encrypted sessions by deault.

Another thing is that iptables is a pain in the ar.se coming from ipfw in freeBSD - sooooooo complicated

installed firestarter for gnome (my only app in gnome btw :) )

Alc - i totaly agree with what maj said - this is l33t disto - get used to other OS's b4 swtchin

I must say i think im doing alright - i have heard of 3days to get some Gentoo system's up and going......

I think outa all the time spent on the upgrade to Gentoo - about 2.5 - 3hrs have been actually physically at the console - the rest of the time has been compiling like crazy

otta 10 - i would give Gentoo 9.5 (Speed gives it this nice rating)

otha distros of merit

freeBSD - 9/10 - based on the security factor and mmmm nice file system and directory strictues (lost marks for not having bash as default shell when doing install)

Ubuntu - 9/10 - This score is only rated as a desktop replacement (im currently using it on my lappy) - think it would be .house on a server environment (correct me if u feel otherwise)

Vanilla Debian 8/10 - Too fancy - Seems to be too tired up in the major items rather than the smaller details (almost seems commercial)

Fedora - Havent used and dont plan on it

maj - feel like doing a similiar score??

gentoo is 1337, really easy to use & the 'emerge' tool makes installing so easy.

but I also use NetBSD & Slackware linux on my boxes at home & they r0x0r.

If i was going to have a distro for my desktop/gaming pc, it would be Gentoo.

what about for a complete linux n00b for a gaming/desktop pc?

If somebody set it up for you maybe, but the problem with Gentoo is that everything needs to be configured manually.

For example, redhat & fedora simplify things like services with an alias.

i.e. to turn on your webserver its as easy as:

"service httpd start"

or to configure your samba shares etc...

"redhat-config-samba"
& you get a nice GUI interface.

But with Gentoo its all manual:

webserver: /etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd start

Configuring samba shares are done in the smb.conf file

[sharename]
comment = samba share
path = /this/is/the/path
guest ok = yes
writable = yes

So all in all, Gentoo is alot more hands on & not really user friendly unless you know what your looking for. If your just starting out & wish to learn everything about it, then I would say go for something like Redhat or Fedora.

I threw myself in the deep end & began with Slackware linux on my desktop PC, I had no alternative but to learn CLI & go from there. After borrowing a notebook from work to be able to browse the net, I learnt how to install GUI & get everything working. Now that I have been with Slax, I can say that I can pretty much work with any Linux OS.

Gentoo was recently rated 9 out of 10 by linux magazine, but rated 2 out of 10 for install. So if you can get your head around installing & using services, then I say go for it.

yeah the install guide on gentoo.org was most helpful - had desktop with howto on it and server being configured next to desktop.

i enjoy using .conf files to set things up anyways - just gives me a better understanding of what is really going on.

Would have to agree on the 2/10 for genoo install

I did a stage 1 install of Gentoo 2005.1 minimal on my AMD64 3200 with a Raptor 10'00 rpm. It took 36 hours approx over a 1.5 mb link using the aus servers. I use my own modified Fluxbox, my own drivers, and only the bare essentials. it RHOMPS home in terms of raw performance, encoding DVD's almost 25% faster than my slimmed down winXP install does. The only reason im still on windows is dreamweaver MX 2004. Editor + FTP software in one application...it very good :)

Im currently making an opensource editor to do the same thing, working on the JEdit project.

Gentoo is GREAT for gaming, but its tricky to setup. Im yet to be bothered, its too productive at the moment with so little distractions.

i got Dreamwaver MX setup inside Ubuntu using WINE

works well and i havent found any probs with it.

Not sure if it works with 2004.

Look me up @ CCGL if you there and i show u.

You an app called Cross Office.

Yeah Source is the only game i play so mite convert my windowz box to gentoo as well

Server just passed 30days of 100% uptime :)

Ill get a screener, my openBSD server hasnt been killed in 3 months now...its mad.

I really wanted to go Slackware with a 2.6 kern, but too iffy. The 2.4 didnt support some of my hardware :(

Edit:
Just realised i have more Linux pc's now on my home network than winblows pc's.

i got 50% ratio between windows systems any linux/mac systems and the ratio is getting worse for windows :s

but you guys recon gentoo would be good for a server/gateway if you wanted to stick with it, and figure the damn thing out?

Hal
15-09-2005, 01:49 PM
Im using OpenBSD for my gateway, and gentoo for a gamer/desktop. Ive optimized it fully through stage 1 install, so im not fully satisfied that it would be stable enough for a server / gateway. Instead i use Fedora C4 [It leaves me with a sour taste in my mouth i know, but at least its easy to manage].

sifnt just use OpenBSD.

sif FC over Gentoo.

I havent done anything new with my boxes lately. Just cbf anymore, i dismantled one of my boxes the other day & gave away most of the parts.
