IBM RIPs OS/2

SAN FRANCISCO - Those with a fond memory will recall it as the
biggest launch ahead of Windows 95. Nearly 10 years after last
updating it, IBM will finally kill off the first Intel-based
32-bit multitasking operating system for PCs.

IBM will discontinue OS/2 products by December 23 and withdraw
standard support for OS/2 products from December 31. Support for
OS/2 products will be available only under a service contract
after 2006.

Big Blue is telling its OS/2 customers to switch to Linux.

OS/2 debuted in April 1987. Many considered it superior to
Microsoft's early versions of Windows - but it didn't get enough
apps to survive. IBM says OS2 now has fewer than 80 customers who
hold about 10 licences.
