This one's for me.

I want a PS2 Linux Kit. If anyone knows of someone who wants to sell it, give us a shout.

If you don't have a clue what I'm talking about, go here:

http://au.playstation.com//technology/linuxkit.jhtml

Quite cool and interesting if you ask me...

I've looked on eBay. AU and US. Nothing came up :(

I don't know if it would count, but US PS2's are non-PAL. They're some weird one (forgets name, thinks it starts with an R).

I don't think it would count. But the kit for them seems cool.

PS2 Keyboard.
PS2 Mouse
Monitor Cable
Linux Kit
40gb Harddrive

Do you guys think it's worth it? Or not?

I just really wanna use it to muck around with Linux. And experiment. Seeing I've always used Windows as an operating system...

can i ask why you want to put linux on your PS2?

Cos Linux is superior :)

BR3TT - I started fiddling with Linux about 2 years ago, haven't looked back. It is getting to the point where it has viable alternatives to M$ stuff... if your interested drop me an e-mail to nuggy@nuggy.net and I can give you a hand getting started with your PC.

You think i dont know this? Linux is superior in every way.

Its just the fact that having it on your PS2 is a waste of time & money. Do yourself a favour & just convert your PC like i did.

I still think we should have a linux forum on here.

More & more ppl are getting involved. I have no problem & im sure Nuggy wont mind providing support for ppl who just wanna get started on it.

I will hopefully be taking my exam in march, I think it may be alot easier to share information & common problems in a forum.

Ads0r i know i wont have to PM you coz you will read this, just consider it.

Great idea... Ads, definately consider this... I wouldn't mind giving the occasional support to those genuinely interested in starting a system...

Thank you for your offer Nuggy for help.

Maj:

I have no use for my PS2. Mum got it for me for Christmas, and I have the games I like on xbox.. I have no need for a PS2.
(And before anyone says "Why don't you take it back"? just don't bother)

I thought the Linix Kit would help me get some use out of it.. Get the kit, buy and old monitor and I'm set, Linux on the PS2 that won't get used.
----------------------

I was thinking about putting Linux on my computer aswell.. Just to experiment. I have heard such great feedback about it, I wanted to experience it for myself...

Around how much space would I be needing for Linux? The PS2 offers a 40gb harddrive. My PRIMARY Windows harddrive is 40gb :?

I might be able to find/get a 10gb. Is this sufficient enough for Linux?

Thanks,
Br3tt

Anytime Brett...

10GB should be plenty if you are just starting out... I am running it on a 120GB drive, and I have about 40GB left, and that is after just a year, and yes that is mostly Linux stuff... But to start out, 10GB is heaps.

What distribution are you thinking of using?

BR3TT
16-01-2004, 05:50 PM
Excuse no0bness :P

Distribution? I assume you mean, Mandrake, RedHat etc?

I'm not really sure, I have mainly heard of people with RedHat 9 I think it is.

Whatever you recommend...

Nuggy

lol, sorry, yeah Redhat or Mandrake, there are a lot out there...

I use Redhat 9, I find it has most of the features I need :) Highly recommend it.

If you wanna do what I did, throw yourself in the deep end & install Rh9 with no GUI. Otherwise i would recommend Fedora or Mandrake (although i dont like mandrake).

BR3TT

Yeah I'll throw on RedHat 9 then :)

Maj, RH9 with no GUI?? Well I guess I can't call you a Script Kiddie ;) How did you find it? I installed with full everything, and just sorta been learning different things as I go along.... As a need arises for a particular thing, I go off and learn about it :) Thats one thing I love about Linux, it can be extremely versatile, if you know how to use it...

Majority of the time i will still only use terminal. Cept when i wanna watch a movie or listen to mp3s.

Originally I installed rh8 with full, But I wanted to learn as much as possible as fast as possible. So then i installed Slackware. But i had no idea how to install anything but RPM's for redhat so i went back to it. As i kept reading i learnt about the inittabs just preferred it there.

Terminal is very useful you know, i use it for IRC at work through Putty.

PS2's may look better... but only an x-box can take a bullet from a disgruntled room-mate and still work

just read an article on it on a news page.

and i agree with you, consoles are just unupgradable PC's now , with badly designed controls

the only console that has remained true to its console roots is the gamecube. and it's cool :)
