hello there, I wanna make a jukebox for MP3's using linux, all it needs to do is be able to transfer files via network and quick boot straight to a prompt where you can browse the filenames to program a song or just select random... you know... like a jukebox...
very basic, no crazy graphics just a dos looking thing. It will probably be set up on a PIII 450 wit 128Mb ram
I wanna program it to be used via a joystick because i have an old arcade machine that I have re-wired to make use of the old style arcade sticks.
I have never used linux before so I have NO-IDEA what I would have to do.
any suggestions for a good version of linux thats easy to set up for that kindof thing?
just another thought; maybe a dual boot beast that can also run emulators of old NEO GEO games aswell??
any advice would be greatly appreciated, maybe we could also set it up at the factory / ccgl's
Hey dude, there should be no prob provided that there is support for your joystick.
If you want a terminal jukebox that should work fine. I think from memory there is a player called mp3blast or something like that.
Games you can get MAME emulators, so there are hundreds of games on there.
Doesnt really matter what OS you use, all of em have terminal & should work fine.

I would suggest just using a cut down RH9 install...
Joystick support could be hard to find though....

Anti-Windows = Good :D
pfft people can have whatever they want. Knowing linux does not make you 1337, you simply are trying new things. I started linux back in march & have never looked back.
Since then i have studied "Redhat 8 & 9 Unleashed" & am currently studying for my certification. People are entitled to use what they believe is better, I will agree that windows is good for n00bs. I am learning this purely to broaden my skills scope.
P.S. Anybody wanna teach me IPTables? i got NFI :?

Honestly, Linux will never overthrow windows in the general market.
Simply because most people are afraid of the unknown. I know some ppl that treat computers like they will explode if they press the wrong button.
Over my time, i have re-installed Linux about 8 times, 5 of those times were when I was learning how to use it, cos I screwed it that many times...
And knowing Linux doesn't make you l337, I just wanted to give myself a big head :D

couldnt you just wire the joystick up and plug it into a serial port? old joysticks like that are not analog anyway (they are like a d-pad with a stick) so that could work....
im sure some linux guru could write their own drivers for that... or just get it to emulate keystrokes

yeah you should be able to pick up an interface on the net that will plug into serial/usb/parallel/keyboard and will have say 16 or 32 inputs so you can control everything from there and they have premade drivers, there is a place in australia but i forget the address, when i find it i will post it here for you..

a DIY one
http://www.arcadecontrols.com
this is the aussie one, $80 for a 28 input PS2 encoder with no key ghosting or anything, enought for 2 control pads, a start buttons and 2 coin operators. I am gonna buy one of these for my jukebox...i am making a digital jukebox in an old style fridge with a built in LCD screen, might have to bring it along to a ccgl for some music :D...thats when i get it done
hope it helps
