View Full Version : Linux Vs. Windows
What are your thoughts on both OS's? What makes Windows better than Linux & vice versa.
lol this used to get a huuge response on the old forums.

I've been checking out the different Linux distro's lately and think i'm starting to prefer Linux, yet to install an OS but wanted to check 'em out first. MaJ bro, hook us up with sumthin ;)
How can you prefer something you have never used? Bro no offense, you are a windows slut & you wouldnt last a week. :?
"i prefer to drive BMW's, although i dont have my P's & have never been in one before".

At TAFE man, not sure what distro it was, but I liked the look of it
Linux is superior, but until it can support windows applications natively, it's never gonna replace windows completely while people are only making games for windows..
yeah
i tried running citrix over mandrache 9, to run windows aps, but whenever i tried to log into multiple sites, it froze. got sick of it. now im back to good old mandrake...but i have no idea with it...haha. [/b]
i find i like windows because it has a very logial folder tree system, and organizing file system. working entirely in command prompt is quite simple with windows, but is much harder for me in linux. thats probably cos im a noob but ah well, i need some training wheels on my box. :D

There both good o/s in their own way I feel (at the moment).
I am yet to use Linux, but I have read up on threads/comments etc about it, and it sounds good.
I've been a Windows user since Windows95. There has been the ups and downs of a Windows Operating System.
If/when I get Linux (I say if because my 10gb won't detect  ) I will be dualbooting.
I have always saw in threads/comments that people still keep to windows for gaming and programs.
When/IF Linux can support everyday Windows applications, alot more people will go to it.
PPL are used to using certain kinds of software, any software that you can find on windows there is an alternate on linux.
e.g. Winamp - XMMS
e.g. Adobe Photoshop - Gimp
e.g. Office 2000/XP - Open Office or Star Office.
All the linux alternatives are free.
What ppl dont know is that games are supported on linux, but only to some extent. I loaded CS to my RH9 machine sucessfully & it worked fine. Games such as BF1942 & DC are currently being worked on, they have been sucessfully installed but not easily installed. This process is being simplified & you can read about it at http://www.transgaming.com
HAL, i dont know what you are doing wrong. I currently am using Clarify 12 through citrix on my fedora machine & it has been working fine for the last 4 weeks. If you need any help bro or the RPM to install it i can hook you up.
to add:
I have also installed DCHub & it took me 15 seconds to download, 10 seconds to compile & had it up & running in no time.

I'm with Maj... As i said in the other topic on here, Linux will never over throw windows.. Cos ppl are afraid to learn new things. People like their comfort zone. And for most, Windows (sadly) is their comfort zone.
As for Game support, that doesn't bother me, I am not really a gamer. But it is getting better, Wine is getting better at letting games run.. And its only a matter of time till it gets even better...
Where did you get DCHub from Maj? I have been hunting around for something that would let me connect to it... Pass on the addy plz :-)
Open DC Hub can be downloaded from.
http://opendchub.sourceforge.net/
ftp://rpmfind.net/linux/PLD/current/dists....1.0-3.i686.rpm (ftp://rpmfind.net/linux/PLD/current/dists/ra/PLD/i686/PLD/RPMS/dcd-0.1.0-3.i686.rpm)
I cant remember which version i installed tho... I think it was the rpm

Thanks maj, ill keep it in mind.

just make sure you don't have windows on the same computer as linix i installed linix on one drive and i had windows on another drive i booted into windows after useing linix for a while and windows tried to format the other drive caus "windows has detected an error on drive d"
No offence Phoenix, but nobody else has a problem dual booting. I have done it many a time with no problems.
Maybe you should get a guide to doing it.

ok, i feel i need to come into this debate.
as far as myself as usning linux in a commerical small biz appication it rocks.
for the home user linux is scary.... most of them got WTF? at a console screen.
form an administrators point of view a network of windows machines is easier for noobs. if u get ya head aroud linux you have the whole network pxe booting and running off a server and saving THOUSANDS....
windows will never die.... linux will always life on.... proof that linux rocks is that apple now use linux.... go to any apple 10.X.X machine and u can use linux console... rock on baby.......
and linux will always rule in the cross platform debate!!!!
yeaaaaaaahhhhhhh baby....

LInux is the sheeet, but for gamers it is pointless at this point in time,
dual booting sux for the majority of people because they get over it quickly,
for web/mail/database/terminal/dhcp etc servers u cannot go past linux i myself find it specifically in the web/database sence 100 times easier to install on linux then windows
iinet use linux for all there mailservers as far as i know (read it in an article today) wich is a sign of the times and that more and more companies are turning to the better and more affordable linux distro's
until a game developer starts to write games for linux then it will not get the gaming communitie on its side, and tht is a major hurdle
but having the amount of users increase dramatically could also result in a change of the os that we know and love as it will get more commerciallized and thus resulting in a change of the way the distro's think
redhat 9.0, any dummy could install and im pretty sure this goes for mandrake as well
i myself love redhat, but that is just what i have learnt on and have not got around to trying more
in time i will though as soon as i get a bigger hdd for my second server
the filing system is not that hard on linux once you get used to it and it has much more advance security features
and i dont have and more pointless sheet to ramble on about so ill stop

Linux so ownz, it has developement apps, Customisable GUI's, a Powerful CLI, and Compadability with windows (MDK comes with drivers) I Use lnux for everything but Gaming, even then Wine is good. 8)

As far as I can see the only real advantage to Linux is the stability and the CLI (plus its free ^_^), great for servers but as far as workstation is concerned windows is better because of the mainstream distro of apps for it. Although according to Microsoft their new CLI thats packed with "Longhorn" is going take away another Linux/Unix advantage and yet another attempt to make them obsolete (according to them anyway...)

linux = 100'000+ programers working on os
windows = 100 - 1000 programmers working on os
sif windows will ever beat linux in a server battle

whats windows 2003 server like?
Windows programers are actaully certified uni graduates, most of linux's programmers are prolly undergrads living in their parents basements. Not that it matter but when it comes to business ect, people want professionality and tech support etc.
If I were to go out and buy a $600 program I'd want my os to run it not give me compat bs.

windows server 2003 is a pos, alright for newb admins that dont know left from right, but most ur high end sys admins are turning to linux for reliability, secruity and peice of mind
as for the statement on the linux programmers
a peice of paper dont make u smart
and working for microsoft specially dont
with linux u are paying for support and in the case of redhat pro server ur talking 2000+
windows eats -, some people just cant face it
and there are very few compat probs, mainly with stupid . like internal modems and poor brand products
eg, i inserted my gigabit nic and linux picked it up installed it, asked me for my ip settings and booted it up without having to restart
easy as taking a ., infact i have taken -s tht were harder to push out

I agree with brainless, Windows Server 2000/2003 is a pos. It is my misfortune to have to administer one at work. Getting a new server soon though. Hoping to have Linux do it all, just gotta convince the Windows lovers here that Linux is a better option.
With 2K/3 server we have constant crashes, services dying, it insults your mother, talks back to you, and gives you nightmares. i think the longest uptime we have had is about 3 days since we got the thing (2+ years ago)

isn't it ironic that most linux lovers and windows haters still use windows heaps.....
(and in nuggy's case, WORK with windows)

This is true .. linux is only weighed down by its compadability issues orhter than that.. windows can eat 5 -s... :P

I work with Windows, i use it at home too. There is nothing wrong with it. I only learn linux coz i want more money  . You cannot say that Server 2003 is . because it is top of the market right now & my company is shipping 25,000 servers a week with it on there. Windows is much easier to configure, you will pay through the nose for a linux administrator. When you can do something yourself why not try? Although linux is free (except for enterprises), Linux pretty much end up costing you the same as server 2003 for support & admins.
Nuggy I dont know why your server is crashing every few days, that is most likely a hardware fault. DHCP server at work has been up since last sept & hasnt been rebooted once. Linux is not a better option, it comes down to preference. I dont play games much but I still do, you cannot say that Linux is a better option unless you are using a computer for nothing but work.

It was a hardware fault ;) Called one of the processors in our server sheet itself, and running exchange was a little too much drain for it.
And I can say Linux is a better option, I do nothing but use it on my home computer. I run games through WineX, everything hums along nicely. Sure there are a few minor things I jump into windows for, but 98% of the time I am in Linux. I guess it does come down to preference. Personally, I got into Linux to learn more, I had learnt all I felt I could about Windows, and until Longhorn or whatever they call their next Windows, Linux I will stick with. The thing I like about Linux is there is a lot to learn, and you have to learn that stuff to be able to operate it properly. So Yes, comes down to preference, but everyone has different
reasons for using what they use. Above is my reasoning.
its more money for me... thats the bottom line.
