fill every spare inch of the car with really loud distorting subwoofahs if you want it to be fooli sic. Otherwise, buy quality amps/speakers. I've got nfi when it comes to car audio, I'd probably ask around @ Strafield Jaycar and JB

I think that Head Unit would be fine.. Being .mp3 compatible and all.
The guys at JB HI FI would definately help you out, and be honest too. Just state how much you've got to spend, and just say what you want.. They do deals for combo packs and they're a top group of people.
You're probably looking at getting something like:
2x 6'9 Speakers
1x Amp ?
Possibly a woofer?
Small bit of advice......
DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM STRATHFIELD CAR RADIO
If you want to get good gear, at REASONABLE prices that arent inflated, USE EBAY. You get 1 year manufacturer warranty. I bought 4 CD players off ebay, NONE had any issues and I paid half of the RRP.
If you dont have an account, lemme know, I can easily get one.
Last one I got was $450 off ebay, RRP of $999. Top quality JVC.

AVOID strathfield car radio...
your around erina arn't you? go down to woy woy car audio, they are the best in the buisness outside of sydney. i personally know the guys from there, and there work is very good.
for a rolla, u'd prolly want to go with 4" in the front, 6" in the back and a nice 10" sub in the boot... dont really worry about amping anything besides the sub unless your gonna be listening to classical or somthing weird like that ;)
4" Splits up front.
Some 6" splits in the rear.
A good 4 x 45w head unit
A good 2 channel amp to run splits. If you try and crank up the volume on the speakers just from the headunit with NO amp, you will destroy both ure speakers and head unit overtime....yes its true. Clipping (crackles) = BAD BAD BAD!!
A good mono amp to run some subs. You can pickup some good deals for pre-boxed 12" or 10" subs. If you make ure own box you risk making it completely wrong for the subs. Different subs like different boxes.
Its worth doing it properly the first time, otherwise you just end up replacing - gear when it breaks or when you get sick of listening to a .ty setup.
Another important note, if you get a sub, make sure you get rid of any rattle in the car body. Theres nothing more annoying than when someone gets you to listen to their 'fully sik' audio gear and all you hear is the car rattling to pieces and them thinking "omfg its soooooo coooool!!!". :)

yer not looking at spending too much just a little bit, but where's where's this woywoy car audio place?

do it in bits... sometimes stock speakers sound OK if good amplification hits them... try changing to that head unit first...
If that still don't rock you, get the 2 or 4 stock speakers replaced with newies... anything decent will be better than stock...
If you need more bass after that, just an amp and a sub would be sufficient...
Oh, make sure head unit has RCA output for low level input to amp...

When I replaced my headunit it improved the sound quality of the stock speakers tenfold.
In fact the difference between my $180 JVC rear speakers and the stock ones was so minimal. To this day im still running stock speakers in the front (short on cash and far too lazy) yet have not had any real issues because I dont listen to music in the car to the point where my brain starts to leak out my ears.
As Faux said, start it piece by piece with the head unit. I got a cheapy amp and sub and I must say that it does add some more depth to a lot of music just dont have it so it overwhelms the rest of whatever you are listening to.
Oh and install it yourself, installation costs are ABSURD, and its not difficult to do.

i was planing on going around this weekend to see if i could find a head unit worth buying, as for the speakers, i'm not sure yet but we'll see after the new head unit is put in,
if someone'd show me how to install it i'd love to do it myself but otherwise i'll get someone to install it profesionaly, in that case i'll get em to throw some speakers in at the same time
Pimped: just pm'd you about your e-bay buys
::EDIT:: i just realised this weekend is probably the worst time to go looking for a new head unit so i'll probably do it some other time but we'll see
Head units, easy to install, done a few now.
Speakers, easy also.
Only thing I havent done is amps.
Replied to ure pm. Add me on msn.
I wonder what cd player he will get ? ~cough~ :)

I installed my amp myself, with the exception of running the power lead through the firewall. Couldnt find a good hole to use and didnt want to drill one. Celica engine bay was incredibly packed around the areas which i was going to put it through and didnt trust myself, so got the guys to run it through.
With a head unit you just need a wiring diagram. Once you got that its all easy. Just make sure you can solder.

LOL
ok you want some recommendations firstly what kinda music do u listen to and howdo you want it to sound..... because theres no point in setting up a fully sic sound system with sub and amps and . if the bassiest thign you lisen too is like classical stuff.
but personal recommendation for cheap and VERY good performing speakers
pioneer dual cone 6" about 40 bucks for 2
pioneer 3way 260 watt 6x9 about 88 bucks for 2
running all that off head deck with all my own wireing works sweet and has a fair ammount of bass
adding in a 200watt amp didn't really help for quality only volumn. but this will not suit those who want the ultra bass thats where mister sub comes in
im getting a jbl 12inch 1000 watt dual cone because ITS FRUCKING AWESOME....
so anyways thats my 2 cents on a cheap setup
If anyone contacts Phoenix let him know his head unit has arrived and its ready to be installed.
I cant find my mobile so i cant contact him.
