hercules 5.1 usb external sound card. The volume thing doesn't work so well, $40. it has three analogue plugs for the whole surround thing.
gigabyte iRam, with 2gb pci 3200. Rev1.3 i think. $250
I'll check back on sunday.

Thats why you get a 6.1 sound card build into your mobo, so you don't need to worry :P

Yeah and onboard audio is just so much better than a pci sound card..

I will clarify
The sound card is a hercules 5.1 external usb sound card. It has 3 plugs for centre rear and fronts
The iRam has 2 memory sticks of PQI, 1gb. So it has 2gb total and two free slots. If you have a nforce motherboard think twice or be very confident of your ability to trouble shoot.

I actually would prefer a seperate audio card rather than a built in combination on the basis of these reasons:
1. though hardly noticable to the uncaring eye, onboard sound does actually use up some of them special system resources.
2. In most cases, (depending on your sound card and your mobo,) the sound coming from the separate card will output better quality sound than one coming from the motherboard
3. Most motherboards dont support digital output
4. Some sound cards support hardware encoding of audio files which would also free up the cpu and some memory a little bit
5. if you have a problem with your onboard sound, its a large inconvenience to get the mobo replaced rather than change the sound card itself
6. I h8 onboard 5H!7. onboard video, onboard sound... i hate them mostly, except onboard lan, which also uses up more system resources than the separate card variants.
I myself have onboard sound but i dont use it as i have a sound blaster live! 5.1 on X-530's. and i find that though its gettin old, it still beats my onboard sound especially using audio editing programs. i love quality especially when it regards to sound (my cuz is a DJ at sydney and i used to b a party dj.) and i would almost always recommend a separate card rather than using onboard audio. unless your using a stupid combination such as a sound blaster 16 2.1 with 5.1 speakers when you have 5.1 onboard audio or something like that.
to sum up, those who dont really care about their sound quality that much and have an average to powerful computer, go ahead and use ur onboard stuff, but those who rather those little helpful extras, definately go with a separate card.
