View Full Version : Redhat pwned by Ubuntu
Hi Guys,
I just came across this article which addresses why the Redhat fan base has dropped in recent years.
http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com/articles/editorial_13
It seems that alot of users have moved to Ubuntu linux because of the fact it was just "done right".
As an old advocate of Redhat Linux, I must say Redhat did shoot themselves in the foot when they went chasing the almighty dollar. They dropped their desktop model in 2003 & introduced 'Redhat Enterprise Linux 3'.
When it comes down to it, users will go for a linux system that they understand & prefer. As this document says, alot of those users are System administrators who were dumped by Redhat only a few years ago.
Now Redhats market share has dropped dramatically & systems such as Debian, Gentoo & Ubuntu are on their way up. Ubuntu taking up most of the linux desktop market these days. Personally I have never installed Ubuntu, but each to their own.
Truth is, ofcourse I am going to recommend a system I use myself, who wouldnt? Im sure if Windows were to drop their desktop model (god willing), not many people would recommend 2k3 for their work environment either.
Have a read, quite good.

probably because ubuntu follows a standard base among linux' whereas redhat just HAS to customise everything right down to the init system, and also setting up an LVM on a single drive machine...

true, but why would anybody want to install a distro where all services are running by default even if you dont need them? Ubuntu & Redhat seem to like doing this to people.
Not to mention the amount of bloatware they add.
Banzai, Redhat can take only one cd depending on what you install. The 4 cds are mainly for extra packages & documentation.
My NetBSD install when it was complete with X was 490mb, the cd is only 170mb to install.
