'Inappropriate' Miss USA's Trump card

Organisers of the Miss Universe pageant have confirmed that they are "evaluating" the "behavioural and personal issues" of Miss America, 20-year-old Tara Conner.

Conner, who was crowned in April, has been the subject of negative media reports following a spate of incidents that are being euphemistically referred to as "inappropriate behaviour".

The former Miss Kentucky is believed to have a drinking problem, despite being below the legal drinking age in the US.

Following intense speculation on the celebrity website TMZ.com predicting her imminent demise, the Miss Universe and Miss USA organisation, which is owned by Donald Trump, was forced to release a statement denying the beauty queen had been dethroned..

"Miss USA Tara Conner has not been dethroned. The Miss Universe Organization and Mr Donald J Trump will be evaluating her behavioural and personal issues to see what we can do to work with her, and what we will do about her reign going forward. Mr Trump will make a determination and announcement within the coming week," the statement read.

Wii breaks Xbox sales record

The Nintendo Wii is the fastest-selling games console in Australian history, snatching the title from Microsoft's Xbox 360.

In the first four days since its launch last Thursday, 32,901 Wii units were sold nationwide, said Daniel Morse, games analyst at GfK.

This compared with the previous record of 30,421 Xbox 360s sold in the four days after its launch in March, he said.

Australian electronics retailers are enamoured of the Wii's initial success. Neil Merola, business manager for Myer's electronics division, described the result as "outstanding".

"When you compare it to [Xbox] 360, we would have sold four times the number of Wii than 360 at launch. So the uptake has just been sensational," he said.

Mr Merola attributes the Wii's success to its broad appeal as a "family-oriented game". He predicts the Wii will "clearly" defeat the Xbox 360 in Christmas sales at Myer stores.

"The core demographic for us is female and families ... so the Wii uptake has been fantastic for us," he said. "We will sell whatever stock Nintendo can ship to us."

Brad Harker, director of stores at EB Games, said sales were "sensational", but wouldn't make a prediction on which would be the better seller this Christmas.

"They're both selling extremely well. I can't say that one is eating the other's market at all; I think the market is growing larger as a result of this," Mr Harker said.

Perhaps expecting today's announcement that Nintendo had seized its record, Microsoft yesterday issued a statement claiming it had just recorded its highest grossing week of console hardware sales in Australia since the Xbox 360's launch.

"Figures from GfK ... show that around $2.6 million worth of Xbox 360 consoles were sold in the week ending 13 December," reads the statement.

But Microsoft's announcement was hardly unexpected, given sales always pick up in the lead-up to Christmas, and this will be the first Christmas since the Xbox 360 went on sale.

Nintendo spokesman Vispi Bhopti rubbished Microsoft's $2.6 million figure, noting "Wii sold (in 4 days) just a smidgin under $13 million worth of hardware (and that's not including accessories or software)".

Although the Wii's price tag is markedly cheaper than that of the Xbox 360 - $399.95 compared with around $650, respectively - Nintendo makes a profit on every Wii sold, while Microsoft makes a loss.

As a result, Microsoft is relying on strong games sales to turn a profit. Microsoft says that for every Xbox 360 console sold, 4.8 games are also sold, which it says is "around twice the attach rate of any console in history at this stage of the life cycle".

It is too early to determine a comparative figure for the Wii, but GfK figures show initial Wii games sales to be high.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess title for Wii was the best selling game last week, despite only going on sale on Thursday.

But Nintendo's sales success could be affected by an impending lawsuit - Interlink is taking Nintendo to court over patent infringement relating to the Wii remote.

Nintendo is yet to make an official comment on the case.

Evaporated Water
Evaporated milk is a shelf-stable canned milk product with about 60% of the water removed from fresh milk. In the U.S. it is not sweetened. It differs from condensed milk which contains sugar. Condensed milk requires less processing because the added sugar inhibits bacterial growth.

Evaporated milk was popular before refrigeration as a substitute for perishable fresh milk, because it could be reconstituted by adding water. In present times, household use is most often for desserts and baking. When mixed with an equal amount of water, it can be substituted for fresh milk in recipes.
According to the U.S. Government (21CFR131.130): "Evaporated milk is the liquid food obtained by partial removal of water only from milk. It contains not less than 6.5 percent by weight of milkfat, not less than 16.5 percent by weight of milk solids not fat, and not less than 23 percent by weight of total milk solids ... It is homogenized. It is sealed in a container ... processed by heat ... to prevent spoilage."

Vitamin D: Each fluid ounce of the food shall contain 25 International Units (IU)

Vitamin A: is optional, but if added, each fluid ounce of the food shall contain not less than 125 IU.

Toasters.

Electric toasters have been in existence for less than 100 years. Yet, people have been consuming bread for the past 6,000 years, and people have been toasting bread since the time of the Romans. Toasting bread makes it crunchier and preserves it, an especially important characteristic for early civilizations. Before the advent of the electric toaster, bread was toasted over an open fire with the help of a variety of simple tools. Then, when Thomas Edison harnessed electricity in the late 1800's, the electric toaster was just one step away from becoming a reality.

Even after electricity was introduced to homes across America, the electric toaster was still not a feasible invention. Just as Thomas Edison searched extensively for an appropriate filament for his light bulb, wire with some necessary properties was necessary for the creation of an electric toaster. Because the surface of toast needs to be heated to temperatures above 310 degrees Fahrenheit, electric toasters must contain wires with the ability to reach very high temperatures without becoming damaged or starting a fire. Such a wire would have many uses, aside from application to an electric toaster. Therefore, many companies strove to discover it. By March of 1905, an engineer named Albert Marsh discovered that an alloy of nickel and chromium, known as Nichrome, had the properties of the sought after wire. Shortly after Marsh's discovery, an employee of the American Electric Heater Company named George Schneider applied for a patent for his version of the electric toaster. In the next several years, there were already several people and companies working to develop their own versions of the toaster.

In the decade following the invention of the toaster, toasters sparked a great deal of public interest, and a variety of toaster models were produced. Then, in 1919 the toaster was improved dramatically by Charles Strite's invention of the automatic or pop-up toaster. This was a huge success, for the timer and spring that it contained prevented the toast in the toaster from becoming burnt. Additionally, toast lovers did not have to constantly watch their toast to determine when it was ready for consumption. By 1926, Charles Strite's Toastmaster was available to the public. The toaster's popularity continued to grow during the next several decades. In fact, the toasters produced during that period of time are not very different from the toasters that can be found in many homes today. By the 1960's, the toaster was common enough and cheap enough that they were available to virtually every middle class family in America. By the 1980's the slots of toasters grew, enabling bagels and wider bread to be toasted. Additionally, heat-resistant plastic and microchip controls were used in the making of the toaster, making it even more economical and efficient than ever before.

The Chinese make light Work of Payment: The Invention of Paper Money:
Around 650 AD, the emperor of China began to issue paper "value tokens" for general use. As Marco Polo reported enthusiastically in 1275, "I tell you that people are glad to take these tokens, because wherever they go in the empire of the great Khan, they can use them to buy and sell as if they were pure gold".

Europeans had to wait until the 17th century when Sweden took the lead in issuing paper currency. Other countries gradually followed the Swedish example.

On October 7, Chicago was hit by the latest and biggest of several fires of an unusually dry summer and fall. Before the blaze was extinguished, fifteen hours later, twenty acres were destroyed and damage was estimated at millions of dollars. It was the worst fire in Chicago's history.

That record held up for less than a day. The next evening a fresh load of hay caught on fire in the O'Leary barn. The wind quickly spread the flames, and the fire department, weary from the previous night's marathon effort, were slow to respond. By the time the whole department could be mobilized, the blaze was out of control. The gassworks exploded a couple of hours later, and then at 7 AM hydrants ran dry when the city waterworks caught fire. From then on, all anybody could do is pray for rain. It arrived late in the evening of the ninth, and around three the next morning the fire at last went out. The fire destroyed nearly 17,500 buildings in an area about 2,500 acres, leaving 90,000 people homeless and about 300 dead. Damage was estimated at perhaps $200 million.
