A "symphony" comprising music from some of the most popular video games will be performed in Sydney next year after sell-out shows in the US and Europe.

The Sydney Symphony will perform Play!, the "video game symphony", at the Sydney Opera House from June 20 next year, under conductor and Grammy award winner Arnie Roth.

It includes music from about 20 games such as Final Fantasy, Castlevania, Metal Gear Solid, The Legend Of Zelda, Super Mario Bros., World Of Warcraft, Lost Odyssey and Sonic The Hedgehog.

As well as a full orchestra, choir and pipe organ, the show will also feature highlight clips from the video games, which will be played on large screens above the orchestra.

"It's no secret among game lovers and connoisseurs of orchestral music that some of today's most thrilling scores are coming out of the video game genre," Mr Roth said.

"This spectacular concert series speaks to the growing popularity and artistic sophistication of this form of entertainment and will attract people of all generations to some of the world's greatest concert halls."

Jason Michael Paul, the concert's producer, is the man behind the "Dear Friends: Music From Final Fantasy" tour that swept the US in 2004 and 2005. He said that his mission was to bring video game music to the masses.

His production will no doubt attract hordes of atypical concert-goers to the Opera House.

"Since the launch of Play! we have been working on bringing this show to Australia," Mr Paul said.

Another person behind the production is Thomas Boecker, a game music producer and the driving force behind Europe's Symphonic Game Music concerts.

The show premiered on May 27 and has already played at various locations across the US, Canada and Sweden. Whether the concert will go to other venues around Australia is yet to be determined.
