I run vnc on a non default port on my home server, and my router is set up so only one external pc can connect to it (pc at my work). I rdp into this box first, then vnc to my home box. Over lan tho mostly its just vnc with no encryption

I use RDP Mostly... but all depends on the perpouse. I will use Real VNC for example in a car computer or computer on the TV for movies.....
Main Difference....
RDP Locks local access. No Monitor. Locks local screen.
VNC Has the option of disabling the local keyboard and mouse. VNC dupicates the screen, so what you are doing can still be seen, so for example, the remote client can still see the screen as you assist with an issue. You also have the option of disabling the clients mouse and keyboard so that he cannot interupt your work, but he can watch......
NOTE: I find Real VNC the easiest to use with minimal problems. I have had huge problems with Tight VNC and as a result i advoid it where possible.

i use RDP, VNC always just feels really slow and laggy.
and that annoys the crap out of me.
RDP always seems, smooth and responsive.
