I'm pretty much keeping my gaming machine for CSS only... Saw this and thought hmmmmm, how hard could that be?

Anyone here done this? Or can coach a person?

gunna need to get someone to coach me during a lan...

I can format and reinstall xp and drivers and stock apps in my sleep...

I believe the source engine is cpu intensive, and not so much video card. Wanna get feedback as to performance of source on linux compared to windows...

I gotta 22" widescreen now and would love to run it at max res:wub:

Its allot easier to game in Linux if you have an Nvidia card, the drivers are allot better then the ATI drivers.
i would say if it was not for vista i would still be running Ubuntu.
its great i love it, but it still has a long way to come.

Best thing to do is grab a live CD and play with it for a day, do all the normal things you would do (within reason it is a live CD)
because for it to something you will keep using, it has to do the everything things you take for granted that windows does and do them how you like it.

And for me, its the little things, like acutally running MSN, all the little things you can do with it that you cant do in other IM Clients. Foobar2000 is a windows only app, i miss having that in linux, i have global hotkeys setup to stop, start, next song etc, that i didnt have the patience to find out something else to do this for me in linux.
Appart from that, i like to try out new games that do get released, not really something i can do in linux.. but, i think if i picked up an x360 or ps3 my gaming on the pc would get allot less.
I should probly dual boot to take care of that, but i dont have the HDD space for that at the moment.
That and to full start to use it, for me, i would probly have to format all my drives to ext3 so i cant do everything on them, linux can easily read NTFS, but i dont trust it writing to it yet, so i cant change anything.

but, i think if you get it all setup and running how you like it.
should only really see maybe 5fps less in linux then in windows.
not much of a hit at all.

lol, I'm going on a post fest,

Just to let you know, the next Version of Ubuntu should be released tomorrow or the day after, 19th April US time.

AND

with programs like crossover and VMWare have said they will be releasing versions with full DX9 compatibility, which would be really good, open up allot of things to run well on Linux and Mac systems.

If only i was a super mod or admin instead of just a mod, i would delete the above posts.
keep it on topic guys.

b.t.w i'm running 64bit Ubuntu dual booted with Vista right now.
so faux, if you have a spare partition or old hdd laying around you could throw in your best, best thing to do would be to dual boot, see how you like it and how things go, if your not a fan. no probs, nothing lost your windows is still there just how you left it. if you love it and dont want windows any more, easy enought to format that drive / partition to get rid of it

If you have any questions, post em up, i'll try my best to answer them, there are a few other linux boys that come to these forums aswell that would try and help aswell :)

Sorry thought it was still on topic, as we were speaking of the launch in perth.

As for the dual boot comments... i've setup a dual boot on my system with a distro of linux, however to move the files across from the windows into the linux file structure is proving to be difficult, any ideas blot0?

my gamer is up to its old tricks

vista can't see the hdd's, kubuntu can't install a boot loader :(

*wahhhhhhhhh* *shakes fist at nvidia raid*

im low lvl formatting the drives atm, then ill have another crack

--

for moving files across, mmmmmmm.. copy them to a 2nd machine and transfer back?

boot win, copy to win box
boot nix, copy from win box, run using crossover

most of the current big name distro have NTFS read ability built into the kernal etc, so you should just be able to drag and drop.
you can only copy, not move, because you cant write to the NTFS drive to tell it to delete the old file (thats all move is, copy here, then delete old)

i have all my mp3's playing off an NTFS drive right now (Rhythm box, i miss foobar2000, installing beep, looks good, might be better)
